House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn announced Wednesday a $2.6 million grant for Trident Technical College to increase the number of nurses and health care workers in the state.

Clyburn's announcement marks the first anniversary of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, known as the federal stimulus program.

The grant, which came from the U.S. Department of Labor, will be used to pay staff members in health-related programs, Trident Tech President Mary Thornley has said.

The grant is the third award the school has received from the stimulus program.

In January it received a two-year, $762,327 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to recruit, train and place at least 200 people in "green" weatherization jobs.

This month the school received a $923,000 grant from the Recovery Act Broadband Technology Opportunity Program.

The college will use the money to create public computer centers with high-speed Internet access.
