Schools help with Haiti relief

A number of Berkeley County schools have contributed to the Haiti relief fund.

They include:

--Hanahan Middle School: HMS has adopted HIS Home for Children in Haiti. Students are collecting stuffed animals and supplies (diapers, crayons, tooth brushes, small toys) for the children there through a "Paws for Haiti" (Placing Animals With Survivors) drive. The school coordinated drop off locations for the public to donate stuffed animals and supplies at local Walmarts. A Hearts For Haiti dinner theatre concert will be Feb. 19 at Hanahan Middle School.

--College Park Elementary: Students collected pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. Donations will be divided between Project 81 and The American Red Cross.

--Cane Bay Elementary: Students, faculty and staff can purchase a tiger paw for $5. Proceeds will go to the American Red Cross.

--Whitesville Elementary: Students could wear a hat in the building and pay $1. A total of $684.59 was raised for the American Red Cross.

--Timberland High: Students sold lollipops, had a bake sale, sold pickles and the staff paid $2 to wear jeans.

--Cross Elementary: Parents, students, faculty and staff can purchase train cars for $1. A wall mural will be displayed in support for disaster relief in Haiti.

--Berkeley Middle School: "H20 to Go" campaign collects money in water bottles to donate to Water Missions International. The goal is $2,000. A student also is leading a letter-writing campaign for the Haitians.

--St. Stephen Elementary: The school raised $1,000 for Haitian relief and donated it to the Red Cross.

--Berkeley High: Beta Club is sponsoring "Hats for Haiti." Beta and student government are working toward a Haiti Benefit Concert in the auditorium in March using local talent.

--Cainhoy Elementary/Middle: Students, faculty and staff are collecting pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. Funds will be divided between Project 81 and the ARC.

--Westview Primary: The first grade is trying to raise $100 in honor of the 100th day of school. Faculty and staff have sold Helping Haiti Button for $5 to wear jeans on designated days. Schoolwide, there is a "Helping Haiti" bucket in the lobby and spare change is being collected. A muffin sale was held. First-grade students acted as cashiers and at the end of the sale, they sorted and counted the money. All money will be sent to the Red Cross.

--College Park Middle: The school is selling T-shirts that state: "CPM Cares For Haiti." T-shirts are $10, and $5 will go to Water Missions. A matching fund has been established.

--Macedonia Middle: Students are cutting out stars, selling them and having students write a message to students in Haiti. They are making a map of Haiti in the back hall next to the multipurpose room. Proceeds will be sent to UNICEF.

--Sedgefield Intermediate: Student Council members are making a contribution to Water Missions International. The school is holding a "Have a Heart for Haiti" contribution campaign. Monetary contribution to a designated charity to be decided later.

--J.K. Gourdin: The school is selling doughnuts.

--Stratford High: The school is partnering with Samaritan's Feet to collect shoes. The girls varsity basketball team challenged the crowd during the Summerville game; they collected 93 pairs of shoes as people took shoes off their feet. On Feb. 2, the Freshman Board began a drive to raise money in all classrooms. The drive will last until March 2.

Stratford Special Education teacher Marie Hein lost her brother in the Haiti earthquake. The department collected money and instead of sending flowers, the money was donated to the American Red Cross in his memory.

Health occupations students are collecting supplies for midwifery bags for Haiti. These include items such as white towels, gauze, antiseptic, paper towels and soap.

--Marrington School of the Arts: The school donated $202.50 to Water Missions International, which is delivering water purification equipment to the nation. Each filtration system provides 10,000 gallons of potable water each day.

--Timberland High: A schoolwide campaign to raise money for victims has collected $270 so far. The Library Media Teen Advisory Board and the Delta GEMS teaming up for the Haiti Earthquake Relief campaign. Faculty and staff members who donated $5 or more to this cause were given a dress-down day. Students who donated $1 or more were given a sticker permitting them to wear hats in the building.

--Daniel Island School: Student Council collected monetary donations, which were then matched by the PTA. The Kindness Kounts Committee collected donations of supplies, including towels, nail clippers, toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs and band-aids from school families. The Kindness Kounts team then put these health kits together.
