Update: January home sales fell, contrary to earlier report
By Warren Wise
Preliminary home sales figures for the Charleston area showed a slight decrease in January of 4 percent compared to the same period a year ago, though officials expect an increase when all of the numbers are tallied.
The Charleston Trident Association of Realtors reported Wednesday that 416 homes sold last month, or 17 fewer than January 2009.
When final sales reports come in from all real estate agencies and home builders over coming weeks, the total will likely increase by about 50 to 466 sales, for a roughly 8 percent year-over-year gain, said Jeremy Willits, the association’s 2010 president.
“It’s a struggle to get everyone to post it by the end of the month,” he said Thursday.
Confusion over the sales numbers arose Thursday after the association released a statement comparing last month’s sales volume against a preliminary January 2009 figure of 372 transactions, which would have reflected a 12 percent increase.
Based on that statement, The Post and Courier reported the incorrect figure earlier today on postandcourier.com.
