Summerville rolls over Goose Creek
GOOSE CREEK — Back where they belong. A year after losing in the first-round of the Class AAAA duals playoffs, the Summerville Green Wave wrestling team is back in contention for the state title.
Summerville easily defeated Goose Creek, 43-33, on Monday night to advance to the Lower State final on Wednesday. The Green Wave will wrestle arch-rival Fort Dorchester, the state's top-ranked AAAA team.
Fort Dorchester posted a 62-7 victory at Lexington.
Summerville recorded five consecutive pins around a forfeit at 125 to stake itself to an insurmountable 36-0 lead. Goose Creek managed a pin at 145 and a win at 160 and Summerville forfeited the last four matches to tighten up the final score.
'We knew coming in here that Goose Creek would fight until the end so it was important that we be at our best,' said Summerville coach Darryl Tucker. 'We got off to a good start and that was important.'
The outcome was somewhat predictable, based on an earlier season meeting that saw Summerville win, 50-25. Jordan Wigger recorded a second- period pin at 112 and Gavin Perkins followed with a first-period pin at 119. Aaron Hansen added a first-period pin at 130 and Bobby Hunter posted a second-period pin at 135.
After Eli Ashby recorded a third-period pin at 140, Goose Creek got on the board with a pin at 145 by Chris Thompson.
Stephen Windham restored order for Summerville with a 7-4 decision over Jermaine Simmons. Goose Creek's Juwaun Foreman scored an 11-5 win over Jaleel Brown, but Summerville answered with a 15-7 major decision at 171 as Matt Pantone picked up the win and opened the score up to 43-9.
'We're strong in the lower weights and were able to pick up some bonus points with the pins,' said Tucker. 'Everyone knows that's the strength of our team. We rely heavily on those guys and they usually answer the bell. The pins gave us some breathing room.'
Summerville (20-2) will try to avenge an earlier 10-point loss to Fort Dorchester. Tucker expects to get the Patriots' best shot.
'They're a very talented team and they are number one in the state for a reason,' said Tucker. 'It's for the Lower State championship so we'll be ready. Our work is not done yet. We're trying to win a state championship.'
Goose Creek's season ends with a 20-4 record.
