Cougars riders finish first in Florida
The College of Charleston equestrian team used victories in seven classes to win the Florida State Invitational on Saturday in Crawfordville, Fla.
The Cougars posted 40 points, seven ahead of second-place Savannah College of Art and Design. Winners for Charleston were Amanda Overholt in the Open Fences, Aly Murphy in Novice Fences, Zoe Merritt in Open Flat, McKenzie Armour in Intermediate Flat, Jessica Latham in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter (section A), Tatiiana Calvo in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter (section B) and Sharon Percival in Walk/Trot.
College track
Charleston Southern's Gabrielle Houston ran 24.44 seconds in the championship division of the women's 200-meter dash, finishing 20th overall at the New Balance Invitational indoor meet in New York.
Freshman Micah Wessinger reset the women's school record in the 800 meters, while Sarah Strickland improved the school record in the mile for the Bulldogs at the Christopher Newport Classic in Virginia. Wessinger ran a 2:18.59 for fourth place. Strickland improved her personal best with a 5:18.12 mile to finish seventh overall, bettering her own school mark.
College rifle
The Citadel won an NCAA air rifle and smallbore competition Saturday, topping VMI and Alabama-Birmingham. The host Bulldogs took first place with a 4,357 total, followed by VMI at 4,259.
