Waterside ranch house in Meggett deceptively large, designed for every convenience

The 21-year-old red brick house at the end of Gibson Road has always had a stunning view of Wadmalaw Sound and 3.7 acres of land.
But it wasn’t until 1998 that Steve and Sara Brush got hold of the ranch home. They fully remodeled the residence, opening up the interior while incorporating flashes of traditional and contemporary styles.
Meanwhile, there are wide open views of the Intracoastal Waterway, and the large backyard leads to a dock on the water. “It’s just so expansive. That’s what blows me away,” says Judy Pardue, real estate consultant with Carolina One Real Estate and a co-listing agent of the property with fellow consultant Syd Powell.
The 4,000-square-foot house, all on one floor, is on the market for $1,250,000.

Steve Brush, a builder, took pains in remodeling the house -- from installing a decorative granite entryway to designing a solarium that takes advantage of the striking scenery.
The house has three bedrooms, all large. Notable is the master suite on the west wing, where all the bedrooms are located. Along with an extra-spacious bedroom with fireplace, water views, pocket doors and his and her closets, the suite has a luxury master bathroom with jetted tub, glass shower and tile floors.
A hallway connects to the foyer, which has a traditional coat closet and a second closet with slats to carefully store leaves for the home’s expandable tables. Built-in storage shelves and cabinet drawers spread throughout the house add to the ease of putting away and pulling out household items.
Granite countertops, an island with cooktop, Décor stainless appliances including oven and microwave, a Sub-Zero refrigerator and two dishwashers mark the sizable kitchen. Next to the culinary center is a breakfast area with its own fireplace. The adjacent sunroom in turn opens onto a screened-in porch.
Off the back of the kitchen is an elongated laundry room with stackable washer and dryer at one end and Sara Brush’s small office at the other. A door leads to the two-car garage with black and white marked floor and several storage rooms. There’s also a sizable porch off the kitchen with a grilling area.
In the middle of the house is the living room. It has a tray ceiling and fireplace – one of four in the house.

A long, granite island with built-in appliances and cabinets marks the gourmet kitchen.
Most floors are oak hardwoods, with carpeting in the bedrooms and living room. As a contrast, Brush’s office has a dark wood finish and engineered wood floors. Located at the start of the hallway to the bedrooms, it also has open sights of the waterway.
A lengthy fence borders the entrance to the property, which is narrow at the front and widens by the house and to the water. “You can have horses if you like,” Pardue says.
To the left of the house is a waterside deck under a large oak tree; the Brushes quip that it’s an “amphitheater.” They built it for an outside wedding of one of their daughters. Meanwhile, there’s a one-bedroom cottage on the western edge of the property.
Pardue says the home’s location is a key plus, not far from West Ashley and right next to marsh and the waterway that runs up and down the Eastern Seaboard. “There are water views from every room but two,” she says.

The 4740 Gibson Road home is located within the Meggett town limits but out in the country. To get there, travel south on Savannah Highway (U.S. Highway 17). Bear left onto S.C. Highway 162 toward Hollywood. After about five miles, turn left on Gibson Road. Take the road until it ends at Wadmalaw Sound. The house is on the left.
