Democrat Rawl tests the waters
By David Slade
Charleston County Councilman Vic Rawl has put the word out that he might consider running this year for the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Jim DeMint.
Rawl, a 64-year-old Democrat and former circuit judge, has posted a video on YouTube, and supporters have created a "Draft Vic Rawl for U.S. Senate" page on Facebook.
In his YouTube video, Rawl said his purpose is "to determine if anybody out there thinks I might be an appropriate candidate for U.S. Senate."
"It is extremely nebulous because that's the way I feel about it," he said in an interview Friday. "I would love to run, I would love to serve, but I don't know that I can."
Rawl figures he would need up to $8 million to run for the Senate. Fort Mill attorney Chad McGowan and Mike Ruckes, a Ford Motor Co. retiree who lives in Summerville, already have mounted campaigns on the Democratic side.
Whoever ends up carrying the Democratic flag will get to fight for what most political analysts think is a safe Republican seat.
"I was figuring that, even if I explore it and can't do it, it raises the level of attention," Rawl said.
