The Citadel football coach Kevin Higgins has hired a couple of assistants well-versed in the triple-option to oversee the Bulldogs' switch to that attack.

Tommy Laurendine, offensive coordinator at Lenoir-Rhyne for the past two seasons, is the Bulldogs' new offensive coordinator, Higgins confirmed. And former VMI offensive line coach Bob Bodine will be the assistant offensive coordinator.

Laurendine replaces Dave Cecchini, who ran the Bulldogs' spread-option attack for the last five years.

At Division II Lenior-Rhyne, Laurendine's offense averaged 259.3 rushing yards per game in 2008, ranked fifth in D-II. The Bears improved from 3-8 in 2008 to 5-6 last season, when they averaged 26.6 points and 294.3 rushing yards per game.

A former Lenior-Rhyne quarterback, Laurendine also has served as offensive coordinator at Washingon & Lee, West Georgia, Southern Arkansas and West Alabama.

Bodine, who played at Tulane, spent four years at VMI, coaching a line that helped the Keydets lead the FCS in rushing in 2008. He also worked at Georgia Southern from 1997-2002 under Paul Johnson and Mike Sewak, helping the Eagles win or share six Southern Conference titles.
