Several judges re-elected
Several Charleston area judges were elected to new terms Wednesday by the Legislature.
Lawmakers re-elected 9th Circuit Family Court judges Judy L. McMahon of Charleston and Jack A. Landis of Moncks Corner, while 1st Circuit Judge Diane Goodstein and 1st Circuit Family Court judges William J. Wylie Jr. and Nancy McLin, all of Summerville, also won new six-year terms.
State Senate President Pro Tem Glenn McConnell, R-Charleston, had proposed delaying the elections because a recent lawsuit questioned the legality of the state's judicial screening process, but the balloting went ahead Wednesday during a joint session of the House and Senate.
McConnell said legal research found there was "minimal risk" in moving ahead with the elections. "We're very confident of our legal position in this -- that the process we have is constitutional."
That lawsuit, brought by 9th Circuit Family Court Judge Charlie Segars-Andrews, is pending before the S.C. Supreme Court.
Segars-Andrews was not voted on by lawmakers Wednesday because the Judicial Merit Selection Commission found her unqualified to seek re-election.
No other candidates for the seat went through the screening last fall.
While the elections proceeded Wednesday, the commission's future screening work has been put on hold until the Segars-Andrews case is cleared up.
Only two of several dozen judgeships were contested, with Frank R. Addy of Greenwood winning election to the 8th Circuit and Gwendlyne Young Smalls of Columbia winning a 5th Circuit seat.
