Man charged after fatal accident

Thursday, February 4, 2010

A Mount Pleasant man was charged with felony DUI after a fatal crash early Wednesday.

The wreck occurred at 2:53 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 26 at the 171 mile marker, said S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Bob Beres.

Beres said a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt ran off the left side of the interstate. The driver over-corrected, and the vehicle overturned.

Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet said a passenger, 21-year-old David C. Phillips of Charleston, was ejected and struck by multiple vehicles. He died at the scene.

Beres said the driver, 22-year-old Peter Charles Zwickert of Mount Pleasant, was taken to the Medical University Hospital and charged with felony DUI.
