Philip Smallwood's 'Lifescapes' at Carolina Galleries

Watercolor artist Philip Smallwood will be conducting a lecture about his work at Carolina Galleries on Friday during the Art Walk. The reception will be from 5-8 p.m. and the lecture at 6:30 p.m.

Smallwood is known for his signature "Lifescapes," a form of portraiture and visual narrative intended to engage the viewer and allow them to connect with the subject's emotional experience of life.

Art opening at 16 Penny Gallery

Local graffiti/mixed media artist, S.H.T and local photographer BadJon will host an art opening and exhibition 5-8 p.m. Saturday at 16 Penny Gallery, inside 52.5 Records at 561 King Street in downtown Charleston. The exhibit will run through March 31.

All pieces in the exhibit will be available for purchase, and both artists will be on hand the night of the opening.

The artists have been collaborating since their early high school years, and have been recognized recently for their "Presents from Punks" art benefit show that raised $3,500 for Toys for Tots.

This event is free and open to the public.

Black vs. White at Robert Lange Studios

Thirty artists invite patrons to join in the jaunty spirit of artistic debate when Robert Lange Studios presents its annual group invitational, "Black vs White," 5:30-9 p.m. Friday. The participating artists have been asked to create two pieces of equal size, one focusing on the color or theme black and the other focusing on the color or theme white.

The annual group show at Robert Lange Studios has been developed to connect artists from the Charleston area and across the country. Artists will present their work in Robert Lange Studios' 2 Queen Street gallery space. Included in the show are a number of guest artists, including Scott Debus and Julio Cotto from Scoop Studios, Kevin LePrince from Wells Gallery, Kirsten Moran, Rob Harrell, Charles Williams, Lisa Shimko and more.

Annual Oyster Roast to benefit Carolina Youth Development Center

Carolina Youth Development Center will hold its annual Shuckin' for Shelter Oyster Roast at 5:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday on Goldbug Island. The oyster roast ticket price includes Sticky Fingers barbecue, drinks and music. Tickets can be purchased at www.cydc.org, by phone at 266-5217 or at the event.

Tickets are $30 for individuals, $50 for a couple. Event proceeds will benefit Carolina Youth Development Center, which has been caring for abused, neglected and abandoned children in the Lowcountry since 1790.

Film about Tim Hussey

"Running by Sight - A Visual Artist's Journey" is a documentary by Adam Boozer on local artist Tim Hussey. The film follows the painter and photographer through a year of inspiration and production.

See the film at 7 p.m. Wednesday Feb. 10 at the Sottile Theatre,44 George St.

Admission is free. There will be a cash bar.
