Burke's Simmons signs with Citadel
By Philip Bowman
Burke High School three-sport star Del’Javon Simmons made it official today by signing a national letter of intent to attend The Citadel.
The Bulldogs get an outstanding athlete in Simmons, a two-time Region 6-AA football player of the year.
He led the Bulldogs to their first playoff appearance since 1968 with more than 3,100 yards in total offense. He passed for 61 touchdowns and ran for 28 more in his final two seasons at Burke, and also played defensive back and handled punts, kickoffs and kick returns.
Simmons also is a two-time all-state player in basketball and is a standout baseball player. He said he’s talked to Citadel basketball coach Ed Conroy about playing that sport in college, as well.
Simmons was one of 27 football players in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester Counties who were expected to sign today.
The Charleston County School Board honored 24 student-athletes at its signing day ceremony this morning.
