Ten of the graduating students are clients of One Stop and were eligible to receive the training at no cost with funding from the Workforce Investment Act. The funds are distributed by the Trident Workforce Investment Board. The program director is Gary Milanus.
The certified course, which normally runs 18 months, is completed in six months. Students are required to attend class two days a week 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. About 60 percent of the class is online, and the students are required to spend an estimated 10 hours a week on online assignments and quizzes. During the training, students complete 86 quizzes and exams, 50 spelling tests, 100 insurance claim exercises, 32 term papers and 50-100 vital signs.
Graduates then are ready to take a certified examination. With the certification, they are prepared to seek jobs in medical practices, outpatient-care facilities and hospitals.
Two One Stop participants received special recognition in addition to their certificates. Ann Miller had perfect attendance even though she underwent several surgeries. Charmayne Nesbitt had the highest average (97.1) and handed in 32 perfect term papers.
Trident One Stop is at 1930 Hanahan Road in North Charleston. Satellite centers are in Moncks Corner, Summerville and Charleston.
