Bishop England coach John Cantey says his team is excited to take part in the first locally televised game of the high school football season.

The Bishops open at home tonight against West Ashley at 7:30 p.m. Television station WMMP (Channel 36) will broadcast the game live as part of its Thursday Night Lights schedule.

"It's hard to control them right now," Cantey said of his team. "They have so much energy. It is a big thing for our school."

The game features a pair of coaches who are still shaping their respective programs. Cantey is in his third year at Bishop England and is 13-10. They went 9-3 his first season, but fell to 4-7 last fall. The Bishops lost their first three games of the 2009 season by a combined 15 points.

"We had the wrong momentum last year," Cantey said. "It was a situation where we got down on ourselves and didn't recover."

West Ashley begins its fourth season under coach Bobby Marion, and the Wildcats are coming off back-to-back 3-8 seasons. The Wildcats also had some tough-luck pills to swallow, losing four games by a touchdown or less. West Ashley returns nine starters, including six on defense.

Defensive speed should be the Wildcats' calling card. Linebackers Nick Bosley and Donavon Bowman are solid, and free safety David Campbell has good bloodlines. His father was a Shrine Bowl pick and played on the 1982 Middleton team that won a state championship.

On offense, Donavon Burns is a four-year starter at tight end, and running backs Jamie Rivers and Jarad Moore have big-play ability. Quarterbacks Thomas Woodhead and Karon Eady will share playing time.

Bishop England returns its starting quarterback and top running back. Mikell Fosberry passed for 988 yards and four touchdowns last season. Andrew Bunch rushed for 859 yards and 13 touchdowns.
