SPA: Container volume up, but taper expected

The State Ports Authority said today that it will spend more than $20 million to raise by one foot its Columbus Street Terminal, which sinks close to an inch a year.

The work will start in October on 54 acres of the peninsular Charleston terminal. It should be completed in April at a cost of $20.57 million.

Also, the maritime agency said container volume continued to increase in July, the start of its fiscal year. Volume was up 26 percent to 73,818 containers last month compared to the same period last year. It marked the port’s best month since October 2008, officials said.

Jim Newsome, the port’s chief executive officer, expects August and September to show good container numbers but he expects volume to taper off.

“I think we are at the peak of the cycle,” he said. “I’m very concerned about the second half of the year because the economy is slow.”
