Master plan unveiled for Patriots Point

Land planners today unveiled a design scheme for transforming cash-strapped tourist attraction Patriots Point and its undeveloped surrounding acreage into an extension of the town of Mount Pleasant, complete with residential and business opportunities.

The aircraft carrier Yorktown is one of four museum vessels docked at Patriots Point.
The plan calls for at least 2,000 private homes, a hotel with a higher price point that existing Mount Pleasant lodging options and a "town center" retail format for the nearly 400 acres of prime waterfront.
George Kramer with urban design firm AECOM highlighted three primary goals: creating a grand harbor-front trail with parks stretching three miles; re-branding Patriots Point as Mount Pleasant's peninsula; and developing an iconic place that would become the town's focal point.
Kramer described the proposed landscape as a "diverse, authentic, walkable character place that has appeal to the residents who want to live there but is also relevant to visitors."
Patriots Point board chairman John Hagerty asked about projected revenue the plan could generate and whether that return could go toward preserving the attraction's aging warships. Kramer agreed to bring estimates to next month's board meeting.
