South Carolina Football: Shaw, Scruggs put on a show

COLUMBIA -- Backup quarterback Connor Shaw and reserve receiver Lamar Scruggs led the way at South Carolina's scrimmage.

Shaw completed 12 of 14 passes for 150 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown pass to Ace Sanders during Saturday's session at Williams-Brice Stadium. Starting passer Stephen Garcia completed 3 of 8 throws for 76 yards. Garcia connected with DeMario Bennett for a 31-yard TD.

"We had one of our typical scrimmages, I guess," head coach Steve Spurrier said following the workout. "We scored a few touchdowns here and there, but there was sloppy play -- jumping offsides, don't snap the ball at the right time, pass protection was not very good.

"The defense did OK, but neither side did very good, to tell you the truth. Neither side did anything spectacular," Spurrier said.

Scruggs led the receivers with three catches for 73 yards in the Gamecocks' second scrimmage of fall camp.

"The receivers caught about everything," Spurrier said. "There were some good catches and throws, but I think Stephen Garcia got sacked about five times out of 15 attempts. Connor (Shaw) and (Andrew) Clifford got sacked once or twice, so that wasn't very good.

"There were some good plays here and there, but there should have been more. The receivers ran good routes and we have a bunch of guys open, but we couldn't get the ball up in the air as often as we should," he said.

Bryce Sherman led the running backs with four carries for 16 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown run. Jarvis Giles and Marcus Lattimore had 15 yards each.

The team will take part in the annual Fan Appreciation Day at the Colonial Life Arena this afternoon from 1-2:30 p.m. Doors open at 12:30 and admission is free. The coaches and players will sign the official 2010 team poster.

The Gamecocks will return to the practice fields on Monday at 3:30 p.m.

South Carolina opens the season Sept. 2 at home against Southern Miss.

Montgomery commits

Linebacker Jordan Montgomery (6-1, 198) of Groveland, Fla., said weeks ago he would commit to USC as soon as he could get on campus and do it in person with Spurrier. That moment came Saturday when Montgomery and his family made an unofficial visit to USC and met with Spurrier in his office.

"He asked me if I was ready to be a Gamecock," Montgomery said. "It's a great decision that I made. I felt that South Carolina was the perfect fit for me."

Montgomery was recruited for the spur position and he feels he will fit right in.

Last season he had 86 tackles with 2 sacks and an interception.

He also had offers from Arkansas, Iowa State, Maryland, Ole Miss, Central Florida and Western Kentucky.

He is the Gamecocks' 13th commitment for the 2011 class.
