Unitarian Church gets federal grant
A $200,000 grant has been awarded to the Unitarian Church in Charleston to help fund the restoration of its interior.
The grant is one of 96, totalling $20 million, distributed by the U.S. Department of Interior's National Park Service as part of its Save America's Treasures program. The initiative is meant to enable organizations to conserve significant cultural and historic landmarks.
The Unitarian Church on Archdale Street, the only South Carolina landmark to receive funding this year through the program, is the second-oldest church building downtown. Built in the English Perpendicular Gothic Revival style, the building is designated a National Historic Landmark, and it boasts a unique fan-vaulted ceiling in the nave and chancel, considered among the finest in the country.
The ceiling is in need of replastering and repainting.
