Upstate man dies after ambulance crashes into car

GREENVILLE — A South Carolina man has died after an ambulance carrying a patient on a non-emergency call crashed into a car.

Multiple media outlets reported that 44-year-old Oscar Whitner died Saturday afternoon. Greenville police Sgt. Jeff Long says a mirror on the ambulance hit Whitner.

Authorities say the county EMS ambulance did not have lights and sirens on and was driving to Greenville Memorial Hospital when it struck the car carrying Whitner on Friday night. The driver of the car has not been identified and speed is not considered to be a factor in the crash.

A patient and two EMS workers were in the ambulance and were not hurt.
