2 women killed in head-on crash
St. Stephen -- Two women died in a head-on collision Friday afternoon on S.C. Highway 45 about two miles south of town.
A man who was a passenger in one of the vehicles was transported by helicopter to Medical University Hospital, the S.C. Highway Patrol said.
The accident happened about 1:25 p.m.when a car traveling south crossed the center line and struck an SUV traveling north, the patrol said.
The drivers, Irish Cameil Weiters, 35, of St. Stephen, and Vernetta Appleby, 53, of Pineville, were dead at the scene. Weiters was driving the car, said Deputy Coroner Bill Salisbury. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, he said.
The SUV passenger, Freddie Appleby, was alert and conscious at MUSC, Salisbury said.
