Friday, September 25, 2009

Defenseman Zach Tarkir re-signed with the South Carolina Stingrays after spending part of last regular season and all of last year's playoffs with the reigning ECHL champions.

Tarkir, 25, spent a majority of last season with the Portland Pirates of the AHL, but returns to the Stingrays after playing in 24 regular season games for the club. The 2003 New Jersey Devils draft pick scored one goal and seven assists for eight points with South Carolina. Tarkir also appeared in all 23 playoff contests for the Stingrays, earning 15 points (5g, 10a) in the team's run to the Kelly Cup title.

"We're very excited to have Zach back this year," coach Cail MacLean said. "His skating ability and offensive skills make him a high-end defenseman in the ECHL. Zach elevated his game and was instrumental to our success in the playoffs last year. We look for him to continue along that path this year."

The 6-1, 189-poud Fresno, Calif., native also spent time with Lowell and Trenton before coming to the Stingrays. Prior to turning pro, he played four collegiate seasons at Northern Michigan, totaling 49 points (14g, 35a) in 151 games.
