State unemployment numbers fall slightly
South Carolina's unemployment rate fell last month to 11.5 percent, another hopeful sign that the economy is stabilizing.
The latest figures, released Friday morning, show that the state's job count increased by about 14,300 positions, largely because school districts began staffing up for the academic year.
August's rate marks the second consecutive monthly decline from a peak of 12.1 percent hit in May and June. July's rate weighed in at 11.8 percent.
The Charleston area's unemployment rate remained unchanged from the previous month at 9.7 percent. Greenville's rate also remained the same at 10.4 percent, while Columbia's rate increased slightly from 9.2 percent to 9.4 percent.
