Keying in on fresh shrimp

Want to know where to get freshly caught shrimp? The answer might be closer than you think.

The beleaguered, word-of-mouth Lowcountry business is taking its first steps into online marketing. A web portal has launched that puts customers, shrimpers and distributors in touch with each other. Meanwhile, individual shrimp docks are setting up Web sites and Facebook pages.

The idea is real-time communication: Who wants what and who has how much shrimp coming in where, and when.

The customer can be all but waiting as the crustaceans hit the trays, or place an order ahead of time.
