Surgery to end Hudock season

Charleston Battery veteran keeper Dusty Hudock will undergo season-ending knee surgery today and will miss the rest of the season, team officials announced Wednesday.

Hudock leads the USL First Division in goals against average (0.279), shutouts (12) and goals against (5). Hudock's last match was the Battery's 2-1 win over Vancouver on Aug. 7.

Women's soccer

After a shaky start, Sarah Catenacci and Marky Boyce gave Charleston Southern goals in a 2-1 victory over The Citadel on Wednesday at WLI Field.

The Bucs (5-1) improved to 4-0-1 in their series against the Bulldogs (2-2).

Beach tennis

Phil Whitesell and Chris Henderson of Charleston defeated world champions Matteo Marighella and Alex Mingozzi of Italy last weekend, 8-6, to win the Beach Tennis USA National Championship in Long Beach, N.Y.

Whitesell and Henderson, the 2005 and 2006 national champions, were soundly defeated by the Italian team at the 2007 and 2008 national championship. Their victory on Sunday marks the first-ever loss for the Italians on American sand.

Fishing

Final registration for Saturday's Bucks Pizza Kingfish Tournament will be held at 7 p.m.Friday at Bucks Pizza, at 114A Jungle Road Edisto Beach. Entry fee is $200. Weigh-in will be from 3-5 p.m. Saturday at Edisto Marina. Tournament information is available at www.buckspizzakingfish.com.
