The Nappy Roots at the Music Farm
While every rap group attempts to put its own spin on hip-hop culture, few artists truly stand out with a style all their own. The Nappy Roots is a group that has definitely distinguished itself from the rest of the pack. With albums that include the multiplatinum "Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz" and singles such as "Awnaw" and "Po' Folks," the group's Southern-themed rhymes have been popular across the country and around the world. This Friday, The Nappy Roots performs at the Music Farm at the Support Our Troops America Fest presented by Kappa Sigma, Kappa Alpha, and Sigma Chi. Tickets are $15 in
advance at Etix.com or $20 the day of the show.
Possum Jenkins at The Windjammer
Americana music is as popular as ever, and the number of bands playing the country-rock hybrid style of music is growing. One of the better acts out there at the moment is the Boone, N.C., outfit Possum Jenkins. Since 2004, the band has been impressing audiences throughout the South. With songs such as "Greasy Spoon," "Nasty Nate's Shotgun Blues" and "Bloodshot Eyes," the band has a sound reminiscent of the North Mississippi All-Stars. It's down-and-dirty Southern rock with a dash of tongue-in-cheek humor thrown in. Tickets for Saturday's show are $5, so there's no reason not to check out these guys when they hit The Windjammer stage this weekend.
Tea Leaf Green at The Pour House
Since forming in San Francisco in 1998, Tea Leaf Green has become one of the more popular nationally touring jam bands. While not as well-known as Phish or Widespread Panic, TLG nonetheless has developed a rabid following both in the U.S. and Europe. The four-piece band has played several Jam Cruises, as well as high-profile music festivals such as Bonnaroo, Wakarusa and High Sierra. This Saturday, you can catch the band in a more intimate setting at The Pour House on James Island. Tickets for the 9 p.m. show are $15. Gaslight Street opens.
