The Fort Dorchester special teams units had a big night in a 16-14 victory at home over Wando on Friday.
A turnover on a botched punt led to one Fort Dorchester score and Patriots kicker Josh Hall made three field goals from 40, 34 and 32 yards.
Wando (2-8) held its own and nearly matched Fort Dorchester's productivity, finishing with 208 yards of offense compared to 263 for the Patriots (8-2).
It wasn't an outstanding night for the Patriots' defense, but the unit did make two big interceptions. Fort Dorchester's offense was held to only 107 rushing yards, but sophomore quarterback Ethan Long completed 10-of-19 passes for 156 yards to get his team within striking distance several times.
"Special teams did a good job and our offense was there when we had to have it," Patriots coach Steve LaPrad said. "We had the ball inside their 20 just before the half and didn't score. But Wando isn't bad. They run the option well and is better than their record."
The first half was a battle for possession, which the Patriots won to carry a 13-0 lead into the locker room. The Patriots took advantage of a short field on its third possession, scoring on a 40-yard field goal in the first minute of the second quarter.
The Patriots' second score was set up by a bad snap. The ball got past Wando punter Paul Peeples and Malik Wheeler recovered at the 4.
The Patriots went to tailback Michael Sellers on three straight plays and Sellers plunged into the end zone from 1 yard out on the third carry with 9:32 left in the half.
The final score of the half was a 34-yard field that capped a 49-yard drive.
The Warriors held the Patriots on the first possession of the second half and then drove 55 yards to score. The big play on the drive was a 38-yard pass from Michael Paul to Brandon Eakins that set up a first and goal at the 1, where Lee Oree scored from on second down.
An interception by Miguel Quinn at the Wando 45 led to the third field goal of the night with two minutes left in the third quarter.
Then Wando made it interesting, driving 74 yards for a touchdown. Tailback Rashaud Singleton, who led all rushers with 77 yards on seven carries, capped the drive with a 29-yard TD run.
An interception at midfield by Tyler Walker with two minutes left in the game secured the win for the Patriots.
