Cougars romp over Stall
North Charleston has shown it can win in a variety of ways this season.
On Friday night, Moses Smith was the main attraction, scoring three TDs in the first quarters in the Cougars' 51-6 victory at Stall.
The victory completed a 5-0 Region 8-AAA season for the Cougars, who are 9-1 overall. They open playoff action Friday at 7:30 when they host North Myrtle Beach.
"They've got a chance," Stall coach Mitch White said of North Charleston's state championship aspirations. "Several of their players can take it the distance on any play.
"They've got a ton of seniors over there, and I've got sophomores. Hopefully, someday, (my sophomores) will be that good."
Smith scored the game's first and third touchdowns on passes of 16 and 10 yards from Myers, but his second score was the most spectacular. He intercepted a pass at the Stall 9 and, with his teammates providing the blocking, returned it 91 yards up the sideline for the score.
The Cougars led 26-0 at halftime, and Corey Washington ended any hopes Stall (0-5, 2-8) had of a comeback. The senior receiver got behind the Warriors' defense to haul in a 48-yard TD pass from Myers about four minutes into the third quarter, then moved to quarterback and went 80 yards with a keeper to make it 39-0.
Myers completed 10 of 13 passes for 158 yards and three touchdowns, and he ran seven times for 54 yards and a score. The North Charleston defense picked off four Warriors passes and recovered two Stall fumbles.
Despite the lopsided score, the Cougars made plenty of mistakes. They turned the ball over three times and were penalized 13 times for 112 yards.
North Charleston coach Jimmy Brown blamed those mistakes on an effort to play more people to keep key players healthy.
"We went away from what we normally do," he said.
Stall's highlight was a 73-yard halfback option pass from Dewante Brown to Rodney Thompson. The play set up Trae Sellers' 5-yard run for the Warriors' lone score.
