There's more than soda in that water

By Denise K. James, Special to The Post and Courier

Soda Water Grill moved from Daniel Island to its new location in Seaside Farms of Mount Pleasant.

Come in and enjoy a classic cocktail served by bartender Amy Mays.

One of Mount Pleasant's most ubiquitous bartenders, Mays loves her regulars and knows their favorite drinks.

The grill is throwing a disco Halloween party, with cash prizes and lots of sparkling fun.

Q: How long have you worked here?

A: Two months, but I've bartended all over town.

Q: Where else have you worked?

A: Finz on Coleman, Abe's Oyster House, and the old Island Clubhouse.

Q: What else are you involved with around Charleston?

A: Nothing else at the moment. I used to be a mortgage loan officer, but I'm doing this full time until I move to the Caribbean next year. I finally decided to take the plunge and do it.

Q: What's the best thing about bartending in Mount Pleasant?

A: Seeing all my regular customers all the time. They've kind of followed me around from all the other places I've bartended. They're loyal!

Q: What's the most requested drink?

A: Definitely a vodka and soda. People are pretty simple around here. They like their vodka, bourbon and beer. As far as shots, I do get requests for chocolate cake.

Q: Who's your fantasy

celebrity to serve a drink to?

A: George Clooney! Just so I can stare into his blue eyes.

Q: Your favorite bar in town?

A: I have two of them. Dunleavy's on Sullivan's Island, and Surf Bar on Folly Beach.

Q: What's your hangover tip?

A: The hair of the dog. And a Gatorade.

Q: Any advice for new bartenders?

A: Always have a smile on your face, and remember the names of your customers and what they drink.

Q: Does Soda Water Grill have special plans for Halloween?

A: We're having a Studio 54 party, so come dressed in your disco best. We're giving away $250 for the best costume.
