Blanton finds creativity in painting, dancing

By Vikki Matsis, Special to The Post and Courier
Thursday, October 29, 2009

Classically trained as a ballet dancer, Tyler Ann Blanton began painting 15 years ago after an injury left her unable to dance. Her creative outlet then became painting.

"I paint out of necessity. It is in my heart, soul and blood. Something's within me pulsing through my veins and in the words of John Lee Hooker, 'I just gotta let it out,' " she said.

Blanton is inspired by automatism, an art technique that is motivated by expressing the subconscious.

The artwork of Tyler Blanton.

She is constantly experimenting with new materials and techniques. Her most recent exploration involves screen-printing using organic pigments and dyes from plants and flowers.

Blanton recently moved to Charleston after living and painting in Italy for many years.

She has work in permanent collections across the world and has been in 47 exhibitions since 1996.

While Blanton could not say what direction her art is heading in, she is open to the possibility of creating something new and is more interested in discovering what comes through her as an artist rather than a creating a look that defines her.

She said, "I seek infinite expression without limitations."
