A Charleston man says a man who paid him $20 to be his bodyguard threatened him with a knife during an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.

Charleston Police met with the victim outside of Star Gospel on 474 Meeting St. about 6:20 p.m. Saturday.

The victim told police that he met the suspect Friday and that the man offered him $20 to be his bodyguard. The victim accepted the money and spent some time "watching over" the suspect, according to a police report.

Both men were attending the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting Saturday when the offender "became upset with the quality of the victim's services," the police report says.

The victim told police that the suspect told him, "If you ever do me like that again, I am going to kill you." He then opened a folded up rag and showed the victim a knife, the report says.

The victim left the meeting and called police. Officers asked the 31-year-old suspect to come out of the building but he refused. Officers eventually went inside and escorted him out. They found a table knife wrapped in a rag, tucked inside his waist band, the report says.

Police charged the man with simple assault.
