RiverDogs to team up with schools
Ten Charleston County schools will be part of a new partnership with the Charleston RiverDogs that will encourage third-grade students to develop and reach reading and fitness goals.
The new initiative -- Reading, Running, and the RiverDogs -- will comprise five six-week "innings" during which two third-grade classes from each school will compete in accumulating points earned from reaching reading and fitness goals.
The program also will encourage volunteerism, with extra points going to tasks that provide assistance to others.
The program will be at Burns, Dunston, Frierson, Hursey, James Simons, Mary Ford, Midland Park, Mitchell, North Charleston and Sanders-Clyde elementary schools. The team will provide incentives for class and individual winners.
