Paisano's Pizza Grill

There are Abbott and Costello, Gehrig and Ruth, Akroyd and Belushi, and African-American Olympians Tommie Smith and John Carlos, for the most part, paisanos all.

Their photos deck the walls at Paisano's Pizza Grill, a newly outfitted James Island restaurant occupying the former space of Gilroy's. Similar, low-cost meal deals -- $6 (tax included) for a salad, wings, sandwich or small, one-topping pizza plus drink -- can still be had, along with a few souped-up specialty and square, deep-dish pizza pies.

For instance, the Zeus, an appealing choice garnished with basil, spinach, garlic, tomatoes, olives and feta cheese. Or the Colbert with a blue cheese base, grilled or fried chicken, more blue cheese crumbles and hot sauce drizzled on top. Or even the Speedy Gonzalez, layered in cheddar cheese, green peppers, ground beef, jalapenos, onions, tomatoes, cilantro and taco seasoning. Overall, the crust is soft, the marinara sweet, the prices ranging from $6.99-$16.99.

The sandwiches ($5.99-$7.99) also draw from the Gilroy's well. The George Street ($6.99) is identical: marinated chicken, melted mozzarella, sauteed onions, green peppers and mushrooms. Try it with a fine lil' housemade concoction of teriyaki sauce mixed with Tabasco; it's sure to liven up the sandwich.

Paisano's has added a pizza sub, buffalo chicken and New York-style chicken and meatball parmesan subs. Mom's Spinach Salad ($6.99) highlights the list of salads, dressed with baby spinach, bacon, cucumbers, red onions and blue cheese crumbles. Homemade dressings are Ranch and blue cheese.

And one more bonus: Paisano's delivers until 3 a.m. on weekends.
