Romney to help DeMint
By Robert Behre
When former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney ran for the Republican presidential nomination, U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., was one of his earliest supporters here. Now Romney is returning the favor.
Romney will appear Monday as the special guest at a Charleston fundraiser for DeMint at the Murray Boulevard home of Sheila and Bill Prezzano.
Several other local Romney supporters, including former Gov. Jim Edwards, former Rep. Tommy Hartnett and GOP National Committeewoman Cindy Costa, also are serving as hosts, according to a copy of the invitation.
The invitation-only event costs $4,800 per couple for hosts, $2,400 per couple for sponsors and $1,000 per couple for guests. Romney's presence at the fundraiser is yet another sign of his interest in a second presidential bid in 2012.
Romney's continued support from DeMint, who is emerging as a national conservative leader, would help Romney's future campaign here. And that could prove helpful in a few years, since every GOP nominee who has won South Carolina has gone on to win the party's presidential nomination.
