South Carolina: 24 / Clemson: 23

The way it works

The user-friendly BRB predicts what to expect from a hypothetical Clemson-South Carolina game every week leading up to the actual game on Nov. 28 in Columbia. Tools include computers, video, quarterback play and common sense.

The set-up

Say this about Dabo Swinney and his coaches, particularly the holdovers from last year: They are real good with backs to the wall. Boston College and South Carolina were must-wins last season and routing Wake Forest on Saturday changed the mood, if not “the culture” — Swinney’s ultimate and recently-stated goal. Talk about respect … Alabama jumps to No. 1 as a reward for conquering South Carolina. The Gamecocks might seem due for a post-Tuscaloosa letdown but an 0-2 skid against Vanderbilt should get plenty of attention at practice.

The vibe

Steve Spurrier is not happy with South Carolina’s running game, offensive line and some of Stephen Garcia’s decisions. All will look better against Vandy. Better than simply looking better, the Gamecocks are primed to take a step forward on offense and getting running back Jarvis Giles back will help. Clemson faces perhaps its highest profile game of the regular season but the Tigers will embrace the Land Shark Stadium energy, initially at least. Clemson players always like the idea of playing in an NFL facility, and visiting Florida. Shining in the Sunshine State is important for recruiting, too.
