Bishops top Ashley Hall for WIT title
MOUNT PLEASANT -- The Bishop England volleyball team hadn't won the Wando Invitational Tournament in three years and the Bishops were eager to end that drought.
That wait ended Saturday, as Bishop England defeated reigning tournament champion Ashley Hall, 2-0, to capture the title at Wando High School. The Bishops won the games 25-14 and 25-23.
Heading into Saturday's match, Bishop England and Ashley Hall had met twice this season, splitting the matches.
"The girls played with a lot of heart," Bishops coach Cindy Baggott said. "Our seniors really wanted to win this bad."
Bishop England's Katie Cummings garnered tournament MVP honors.
Bishop England defeated Lexington 2-1 (15-25, 25-15, 15-11) to reach the final, while Ashley Hall defeated Eastside 2-1 (25-18, 24-26, 15-12) to play for the title.
Hilton Head defeated Pinewood Prep 2-1 (25-18, 23-25, 15-8) to win the consolation match.
In other finals, Porter-Gaud downed Hillcrest 2-0 (26-24, 25-23) to win the Silver Division and James Island beat Bluffton 2-0 (25-17, 25-23) to win the Bronze Division.
James Island also earned the Sue LeBlane Sportsmanship Team award.
