We Asked . . . Air Force Capt. Kari Fleming
About flying C-17s and clearing a path for an ambulance on Don Holt Bridge
Meet Kari
Job: C-17 pilot.
Residence: Mount Pleasant.
Family: Husband, Ryan; daughter, Jaden.
Age: 28.
Hobbies: Running with my dogs, any outdoor activity or sport, traveling.
Q: Why do you enjoy flying?
A: I could not think of a more exciting way to serve my country.
Q: Do you still get an adrenaline rush?
A: It is extremely engaging. Each day brings a new mission with unique challenges. I have seen more of the world than I had ever imagined seeing.
Q: You graduated from the Air Force Academy in 2003. Name something you've learned since then.
A: Occupationally, I learn something new every day. As an officer and a pilot, training never stops. We constantly work and train for the next qualification, degree or leadership school.
Q: At last count, you had amassed more than 1,200 flying hours, including 900 in the C-17 and in combat missions. What is your biggest challenge while taking part in a combat mission?
A: Like any other military member, it is difficult dealing with being away from my home and family for long periods of time. I am always excited to leave on a mission, but hearing an American controller for the first time on the way home is always great.
Q: What accomplishment are you proudest of?
A: I have yet to accomplish my goals as a pilot. My husband and I were blessed with a baby girl this past spring. The transition into a working mother has been the most rewarding accomplishment to date.
Q: What do you do for fun?
A: I would have to say that my job is fun. My husband is a pilot as well, so our time as a complete family is limited. We spend those precious moments together enjoying the many attractions that Charleston has to offer.
Q: What is your favorite movie?
A: "What About Bob?"
Q: Book?
A: Anything by Nelson DeMille.
Q: What do you think about being stationed in Charleston?
A: It has been an amazing assignment. Charleston has been a wonderful place for my husband and me to start a family. The Charleston Air Force Base is the best base to start a career with. I have had the privilege to be a part of some of the missions unique to Charleston. I will leave here (in the next couple of years) with experiences that are not available anywhere else.
Q: What unique challenges do you face as a woman in the military?
A: I would not say that there are any additional challenges as a female in the military. Pregnancy was challenging for me since I was unable to fly. Everyone was extremely supportive, but it was hard for me to watch my peers accomplishing exciting missions while I was grounded.
Q: What advice would you give other women considering joining the military?
A: I would advise anyone considering the military as a career option to do their research.
The opportunities are limitless, and there is truly something that will satisfy any ambition. The many experiences had in one military career could not be bought on the outside. But like any job path, the military is not for everyone.
Q: What is your biggest fear?
A: I'm not sure, but the safety of my child is something that I always worry about. I'm sure it is the same for any parent.
Q: What do you think of the media's fascination with the bridge incident?
A: I am shocked. People perform miracles every day that go unreported. I never imagined that doing what needed to be done would grab the attention of the local media. There are individuals that deserve the accolades more than I do.
