Lowcountry Indie Shorts Day

Back by popular demand, the Greater Park Circle Film Society and Carolina Film Alliance reinstituted the Lowcountry Indie Shorts Day last Saturday.

Those expecting a large film fest were a bit surprised (and pleased) at the low key, laid back format of the Park Circle "Talking Picture House." Thirteen local independent short films were shown in two blocks at 5 and 7 p.m. More than 200 film buffs piled into the theatre throughout the evening, resulting in sold out shows and standing room only areas.

After each film, the creators, actors and directors discussed their work. Film goers asked great questions about the nature of filmmaking and the translation of vision prompting entertaining stories about the police moving crews off of locations. Speakers really conveyed the passion and love for their craft. The highlight of the 7 p.m. block was "Dust" by Davis Smith and John Barnhart, which featured brilliant acting and a moving script. Also notable was Brad Jayne's "Le Croisement" shown during the 5 p.m. show.

Large crowds came out to explore the latest Friends of the Library book sale.

That Big Book sale

Last weekend, Charleston geeked out for a really great cause.

More than 10,000 people flooded the Gaillard Municipal Auditorium on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to take advantage of the 27th annual "That Big Book Sale." The annual fundraiser thrown by the Friends of Charleston Library donates all proceeds to Charleston County Libraries.

Bibliophiles pawed through over 60,000 used books, CD's, DVD's and tapes to get some serious deals. Paper backs started at only $1 and hard backs at $3. No area of interest was ignored.

Shoppers browsed selections in art, travel and philosophy, snatched up signed fiction and nonfiction and raved about sci-fi classics. A rare book and art auction featured works by John C. Doyle, Jack Alterman and others.

I waited to shop until Sunday, when everything left was half price. I walked away with a fantastic coffee table book and five other titles for $10. If you missed the downtown sale, you can still catch the Mount Pleasant event in December. Check out http://www.charlestonlibraryfriends.org for upcoming details.
