Hunting Island lighthouse marks 150th anniversary

BEAUFORT — Hunting Island's lighthouse was built 150 years ago and a four-day celebration marks the anniversary.

Events begin Thursday and run through the weekend, sponsored by Hunting Island State Park near Beaufort and the support group Friends of Hunting Island.

Parking is free Saturday and Sunday. Other events at and near the park include a barbecue, art sale, sand sculpture, steel band music and an original play “The People of the Light.”

Hunting Island is South Carolina’s most popular state park, visited by more than 1 million people a year.

The 170-foot tall light is the only publicly accessible historic lighthouse in the state.

Climbing to the top offers views of Lowcountry marshes and the ocean.
