Bornhorst has an eye for the beauty of the world

By Vikki Matsis, Special to The Post and Courier
Thursday, October 15, 2009

Traveling around the world inspired Alexis Bornhorst to become a photographer. While living in Germany, she would travel to a different country every weekend. From the architecture of Poland to the magnificence of Greece, Bornhorst began to realize the beauty in the everyday world around her in Charleston.

She then showed her pictures to Sharon Bohn, a local professional photographer who gave Bornhorst a public outlet for her creative work. For the past two years, Bornhorst has been selling her photography with Bohn at the Notable Photos booth at the downtown Farmers Market.

"Life is a series of snapshots in your mind. Photography can capture many emotions in one still frame and just by looking at pictures you can be brought back to that moment instantly. It takes all of a second to capture but yet it can remind you of so many more things than what you see in the picture," Bornhorst said.

Through Oct. 31, Bornhorst and Bohn will have their photography at the Saul Alexander Foundation Gallery at the downtown public library. The show, entitled "360 degrees of Charleston," begins in the Earth with photos of fruits, vegetables and the soil it comes from.

You can visit the artist every week at the downtown farmers market at the big fat Greek gyro tent. After years of being a manager at Kaminski's, she is the owner of her own catering business called Alexandria the Great and hopes to one day open her own restaurant.
