Edgar Allen Poe, who spent a lot of time in Charleston, would have been 200 this year.
This weekend, the folks at Creative Spark will bring out the spooky early as Halloween approaches and scary decorations start to go up around the Lowcountry.
"Edgar Allan Poe: Back from the Grave" is a performance art event where the author's characters will come to life at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island "through vignettes, special effects and musical entertainment," according to a press release. Fort Moultrie is the perfect setting to relive Poe's work. The author was stationed at the facility in 1827 as a private in the U.S. Army and his famous short story "The Gold-Bug" is set on Sullivan's Island.
And the fright factor is guaranteed.
Creative Sparks warns that its Saturday night event is not suitable for children under 12 years of age, but a special presentation for children will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the fort auditorium, where movies and actors will introduce children to Poe's work.
The cost for the Friday night event is $5 per child and there will be no additional cost to adult ticket holders.
The 200th anniversary of Poe's birthday is Oct. 7.
He wrote some of the most horrific tales in literature and in death, those stories live on.
