Charleston parks get recycling bins

Wednesday, October 7, 2009

Charleston has started putting recycling bins in city park, as part of an initiative to reduce the amount of recyclable material going to the county landfill.

Funded by the city, county and a $10,000 grant from the Nestle Waters North America Corp., the program will initially put 27 recycling containers in Marion Square, Hampton Park, White Point Garden and Waterfront Park.

"Each and every step the residents of the city of Charleston can take to keep plastic out of landfills and recycled is wonderful and extremely important to the environment," Mayor Joe Riley said Monday. "I look forward to seeing recycling bins installed in each park in the city of Charleston."

Visitors will be able to recycle cans, plastic bottles (No. 1 and No. 2) and glass in the bins.
