Man dies when hit by car

A 24-year-old Johns Island man was killed early Monday when he was struck by a car after stopping to help another driver whose car was stuck in a ditch.

"He was just being a Good Samaritan," Charleston County Deputy Coroner Bobbi Jo O'Neal said.

Aubrey Heyward was driving south on Bohicket Road near Edenvale Road about 5:30 a.m. when he noticed a sport-utility vehicle in a ditch, according to police reports.

He pulled off the road and onto the shoulder to offer assistance.

The driver of the SUV in the ditch was wandering in the road, apparently intoxicated, police reports said.

Heyward flagged down a private ambulance that was passing by and asked the ambulance driver to call police and report the drunken driver, reports said.

As he stepped away from the ambulance and into the road, he was stuck by another car. He was transported to Medical University Hospital where he was pronounced dead, O'Neal said.

The SUV driver, 22-year-old Michael Kutch, was charged with driving under the influence, Charleston County sheriff's Maj. John Clark said. The driver of the car that struck Heyward, Leonard Garrison, 25, was charged with driving too fast for conditions.

The accident is still under investigation by the sheriff's office.
