Free awareness events and services
Oct. 3: Health Ministry Empowerment Tour. The three-city event targets minority women in rural communities to provide them with health education and quality-of-life resources. The event will feature free health screenings including mammograms in the mobile mammogram unit, life management workshops, entertainment and lunch. Oct. 9-10: Rally for the Cure, part of the Pink Heals Tour 2009. Firefighters for a Cause will roll into town on pink firetrucks to show support for women fighting cancer and to inspire men to support the women of their community. Brought locally by the Red Knights Motorcycle Club, S.C. Chapter 3. Events will be held in several locations in Charleston, North Charleston and Summerville. www.pinkheals.com.
Oct. 14: Day of Giving. Women undergoing cancer treatments and survivors are invited to receive a free spa treatment at The MoM Spa, 920 Houston Northcutt Blvd., Suite A-4, Mount Pleasant. Oct. 17: Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure will be held on Daniel Island. Events include the Pretty in Pink Cafe and expo at 7 a.m., Survivor Celebration at 8 a.m., Family Fun Run/Walk at 8:30 a.m., 5K Run/Walk at 9:10 a.m. and awards ceremony at 10 a.m. Individual registration for the 5K is $25 before Oct. 15, $30 after. www.komenlowcountry.org.
Oct. 21: Deanna Favre book signing. The wife of NFL quarterback Brett Favre will speak about her journey after being diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2004, and will sign copies of her book, "Don't Bet Against Me," at 7 p.m. at the College of Charleston's Physicians Auditorium, 72 George St. Hosted by the college's Chi Omega Sorority and the Hollings Cancer Center.
Oct. 22: Ladies Night Out. Roper St. Francis invites women to a night of food, gifts, music, massage and free clinical breast exams 5-7:30 p.m. Vouchers for free mammograms will be available for women who meet financial criteria. Oct. 25: Pink Sunday. The Lowcountry Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure will donate educational materials and incentives to registered churches and faith-based organizations as part of a new community outreach program for breast health and cancer awareness. komenlowcountry.org or 266-2699.
Fundraisers
October: Brighton Collectibles, 244 King St., will feature two gifts to promote its 2009 Power of Pink Campaign. $10 from every Power of Pink Bracelet ($48) and Pink Swarovski Crystal ID Holder ($40) will be donated to the Hollings Cancer Center.
October: All Jersey Mike's Subs restaurants in the Charleston area will donate $1 for every No. 7 Turkey Sub to benefit the breast cancer programs at Hollings Cancer Center.
October: When a customer mentions Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Castle Keepers of Charleston will donate 10 percent of the cost of any chemical-free residential cleaning booked during October to the Charleston Breast Center, a nonprofit, community-based health center. 572-4757.
Through Oct. 20: Tanger Outlet Mall will offer Tanger Pink Style Savings Cards for $1, which will be donated to breast cancer programs at Hollings Cancer Center. With each card, customers save 25 percent on a single item at a participating outlet store. 4840 Tanger Outlet Blvd. Cards can be purchased at the Tanger Shopper Service Center and online at tangeroutlet.com.
Oct. 8, 15, 22, 29: Circa 1886 restaurant, 149 Wentworth St., will offer a $75 tasting menu for dinner 5:30-10 p.m. Thursday nights in October with 10 percent of the price donated to the Charleston Breast Center.
Oct. 3: All local Applebee's locations (except Rivers Avenue) will host a $5 all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast 8-10 a.m. with proceeds to benefit Charleston Breast Center. Tickets must be purchased in advance by calling the center at 556-0116.
Oct. 6-8: Long Island Cafe, 1515 Palm Blvd., #A, Isle of Palms, will donate 10 percent of proceeds to Charleston Breast Center.
Oct. 7: Salon Couture, 420 King St., will host a Hair Extension Party, offering pink hair extensions for $15 per extension with $5 supporting Charleston Breast Center. 6-8 p.m.
Oct. 9-11: Ace Breast Cancer Tennis Tournament at I'On Clubhouse, Mount Pleasant. www.ACEBreastCancer.org.
Oct. 10: Decorate a cookie at Cookies by Design, 280 W. Coleman Blvd., #3, Mount Pleasant, and 10 percent of all purchases will be donated to Charleston Breast Center. 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.
Oct. 15: Serenity Salon and Spa, 1706 Old Trolley Road, Summerville, will offer its services at reduced prices, and all money raised will help pay the medical bills of Leslie Moore, who is undergoing treatment for breast cancer. 1-7 p.m. 851-1810.
Oct. 15: Mad River Bar & Grill, 32 N. Market St., will donate 10 percent of its proceeds to Charleston Breast Center. 6-9 p.m.
Oct. 15-18: Saks Fifth Avenue, 211 King St., will hold its the Key to the Cure Shopping Weekend, donating a percentage of its sales to breast cancer programs at the Hollings Cancer Center.
Oct. 17: Paint the Town Pink party, hosted by Y102.5 and The Mills House, 115 Meeting St., will be held 7-10 p.m. Cocktail attire, silent auction, cash bar, hors d'oeuvres and pink desserts. Suggested donation of $15 to benefit Charleston Breast Center. 856-6140.
Oct. 18: Gold's Gym is accepting $15 donations to the Charleston Breast Center to take a Spinning class. It also will sell raffle tickets for a chance to win prizes as a benefit for the local breast center. 9-11 a.m. and 3-5 p.m.
Oct. 21: T-Bonz, Liberty Tap Room & Grill and Pearlz restaurants will donate 10 percent of proceeds to Charleston Breast Center.
Oct. 22: Chicks With Checks event at Facelogic, 1949 Long Grove Road, Mount Pleasant. Suggested donation of $35 for facial screening/analysis. $25 supports Charleston Breast Center.
Oct. 22: Women & Wine Happy Hour at Tristan, 55 S. Market St. Five percent of proceeds support the Charleston Breast Center. 6-8 p.m.
Oct. 24: Bond Street Imports and Tristan Restaurant, 55 S. Market St., will host a wine tasting at 5:30 p.m. with all proceeds to benefit Charleston Breast Center. $35.
Oct. 25: Pink Roast at Bowen's Island Restaurant, 1-5 p.m. at 1870 Bowen's Island Road. Charleston Junior Women's Club hosts an oyster roast also including beer, wine, other food and dessert, as well as live music from Triple Lindy. $30 advance, $35 day of, $5 kids 6-12. For tickets: cjwc.org.
Oct. 25: 2nd Annual Jerry Zucker Ride for Hope includes three cycling courses, a 30-Mile, 50-Mile or 100K. All funds raised will go to local cancer institutions including Hollings Cancer Center and Share Our Suzy. 8 a.m. at Blackbaud Stadium, Daniel Island. www.charlestonrideforhope.com.
Oct. 28: Fleet Landing will host a Pink Happy Hour 4-7 p.m. Pro-ceeds from items purchased during the happy hour and dinner that night will go to Charleston Breast Center.
