Pure Theatre goes 'Up'
Pure Theatre presents "Up" by Bridget Carpenter. The play, directed by Pure's artistic director and co-founder Sharon Graci, will feature R.W. Smith, Cristy Landis, Jon Raz Van Pinxteren, Carly Sumner Ridgeway, Rodney Lee Rogers, and Tara Denton. It will open tonight at Upper Lance Hall on the grounds of Circular Congregational Church, and will run through Oct. 24.
"'Up' is a play about the desire in each and every one of us to fly, to lift off, to rise above, to transcend. But perhaps just as importantly, 'Up' is about what keeps us tethered to the ground, and how we can so easily miss the extraordinary within the ordinary," says Graci.
Tickets are $20-30 and are available at puretheatre.org or by calling 723-4444. Tickets can also be purchased the night of the show at the box office at the church, 150 Meeting Street. Seating is limited, and advance ticket purchases are encouraged. Student rush tickets are available for $15 with a valid student ID, for tickets remaining at curtain.
SATURDAY
Gallery 57 transforms into 'Studio 57'
For one night only, Gallery 57 will transform into "Studio 57," a performance piece that will embody the spirit of the '70s disco era. Art and dance fuse together in one night, featuring paintings by Charlie McAlister, Matt Foreman and Timmy Pakron, and the grooves of DJ Geoffrey Hernandez.
The idea for this exhibition came to Jill Hunter while struggling with a large debt to the IRS. After selling most of her furniture and valuables to repay the IRS, Hunter came up with the idea of converting the empty downstairs of her house into an art gallery. The next logical step would be to throw a giant disco party where the glamor of the '70s combines with the gallery's slogan of "frivolity, absurdity, hilarity."
The opening disco night party for "Studio 57" will be 9 p.m. Saturday and will run through Oct. 13. Gallery 57 is at 57 Chapel Street, Charleston. Admission is $5 at the door and includes party favors.
