Donation can help family that relocated to escape abuse

Monday, November 30, 2009

Even though the national economy is showing signs of strengthening and the Lowcountry is looking forward to the addition of jobs thanks to the expansion of Boeing, times still are tough for many people. And that's when all of us who still have the means should step up and help those among us who are less fortunate.

The Good Cheer Fund was created in 1927 to assist Lowcountry people in need during the holiday season. Through good times and bad, our community has responded generously. From the $1,797 collected that first year through the $312,188.94 in 2009, our readers have contributed more than $5.5 million to help the less fortunate in our area.

Six charitable organizations — The Salvation Army, Star Gospel Mission, Association for the Blind, Catholic Charities, Carolina Youth Development Center and the Lowcountry Food Bank — receive every cent of the money raised. There are no administrative costs involved and funds are not distributed to any individual or organization outside the Good Cheer Fund agencies.

How can the money help? Take the single mother who recently moved to Charleston to escape an abusive relationship that resulted in the sexual abuse of her three children, the youngest of which is 5. As a result of the abuse, the children were acting out at school and were asked to leave. Their mother must home-school them, making it impossible for her to work. The courts are searching for their father and others who abused them while the children must receive psychological counseling every week.

The holidays would not look very bright for this family if it weren't for a Good Cheer Fund agency providing them with nutritious food and some toys for Christmas.

You can help this family and others like them by sending your tax-deductible contribution to the Good Cheer Fund, c/o The Post and Courier, 134 Columbus St., Charleston, SC 29403-4800. Donations also may be made in person and online at Goodcheerfund.com.

Any amount can help make Christmas brighter for our neighbors in need.
