A Bluffton Bank of America surveillance photo taken Tuesday shows a bank robbery suspect who has struck three times in the last two days in Georgia and South Carolina. Authorities think the suspect may be traveling north up Interstate 95 and robbing banks near the interstate exits.
The FBI's Columbia office on Friday said agents think the same man has robbed three banks since Tuesday in towns along Interstate 95, and may be planning to strike again.
A Wachovia Bank branch in Pooler, Ga., was the first bank robbed at about 1 p.m. Tuesday. An hour later, the robber struck again at a Bank of America branch in Bluffton, according to an FBI press release.
On Wednesday, the same man is thought to have been responsible for the 2 p.m. holdup of a Wachovia Bank branch in Walterboro.
Investigators believe the robber may be traveling north on the interstate and robbing banks located near interstate exits, the release said.
The FBI released photos from a bank surveillance camera with the hope that someone might recognize the man and provide information about his identity.
In each of the robberies, the robber claimed to have a gun and demanded money, the press release said.
In the robberies in Georgia and in Bluffton, the man ran away on foot, but in the Walterboro case, the robber reportedly used a late-model blue car to make his getaway.
The robber has worn the same clothing in two of the three robberies, and he has worn a University of Miami Hurricanes baseball cap in all three. Though he has not been seen with a gun, the FBI considers him armed and dangerous because he threatened to use a gun in all three robberies.
The robber was described as a white or Hispanic male, 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall, 180-200 pounds. He has olive skin and a neatly groomed goatee.
Anyone with information about the robber should call the Columbia Division of the FBI at (803) 551-4200 or a local FBI office. The number for the Charleston office is 722-0135.
