Pilot reported low fuel
GREENVILLE -- A pilot told air traffic controllers that he was low on fuel moments before his plane skimmed a highway and crash-landed just short of a runway at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, federal investigators said.
A preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board unveiled new details about the Nov. 9 wreck that seriously injured three, including two avionics technicians who work for Stevens Aviation.
Two mechanics checked the Beechcraft King Air's fuel levels before the flight and reported that each of the main tanks had 200 pounds, according to the report.
The plane took off into clear skies at 9:50 a.m. and hit the ground at 10:09 a.m., investigators wrote.
Aviation expert Chris Nutter said it is conceivable that the plane could have burned all its fuel in 19 minutes.
The pilot, Mado MacDonald of Virginia Beach, Va., was listed in good condition Tuesday at Greenville Memorial Hospital, while Stevens Aviation employees Derrick Holliday and Ed Wilk have been released, hospital spokeswoman Sandy Dees said.
