Store robbers take off with cash, clerk's car
By Andy Paras
Charleston police are looking for two men who robbed a downtown convenience store then fled in a clerk's car on Monday.
The robbery happened at 5 a.m. at the Kangaroo Express at 588 East Bay St.
The victim told police she parked her car at the store and was getting out when two men approached her and told her not to scream. They indicated that they had a weapon, possibly a gun, according to a police report.
The suspects escorted the victim into the 24-hour store, where another employee was already working. The men instructed the victim to open the time-delay safe and cash register. The suspects took the money when the safe opened five minutes later. They then demanded the victim's car keys and fled.
Police declined to describe the type of vehicle and license plate number.
The first suspect is described as an older black man with a slim build, about 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall. He wore a black jacket, brown, work-style boots and a camouflage face mask that covered the bottom half of his face.
The second suspect is described as a younger black male with a slim build, about 6-foot-3. He wore a blue hooded sweatshirt with a ghost image of rapper Tupac Shakur on the back and a black bandana that covered the bottom half of his face.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
