USC women bow to Wake in NCAA as time expires

COLUMBIA -- Wake Forest's Bess Harrington scored on a header in the final second as the Demon Deacons (16-5-2) pulled out a 1-0 win over South Carolina (19-4-2) at Stone Stadium on Friday night in the NCAA women's soccer touranment third round.

Wake Forest forward Jill Hutchinson soared a corner kick into the box that found the head of Harrington, who connected with a direct header that went past the Gamecock defense and keeper Mollie Patton and into the net just before the buzzer to end regulation.

College volleyball

No. 2 seed Liberty (20-11) eliminated No. 6 Charleston Southern (17-17) in the Big South Tournament semifinals, posting a 3-2 win over the Bucs in Radford, Va. The Highlanders won 25-16, 21-25, 25-14, 26-28, 15-10. Amanda Hill led the Bucs with a match-high 26 kills and hadd 17 digs.

--The College of Charleston (16-12), seeded second, faces No. 3 seed Samford (17-13) at 2:30 p.m. today in its Southern Conference tournament opener at Furman's Alley Gymnasium in Greenville. Top seed Furman(25-3) and No. 4 Appalachian State (14-16) kick off the tourney at noon.

Shadowmoss' Laura Rawl and Coosaw Creek's Judy Hair tied with 84 for the field low gross honors in the Charleston Area Ladies Golf Association event held Tuesday at Coosaw Creek Country Club. Judy Guarino of Wild Dunes took field low net with 71.
