Tigers punch ticket for Tampa
By Travis Sawchik
Clemson’s first ACC Atlantic Division was clinched in anti-climatic fashion Saturday.
Clemson (8-3, 6-2 ACC) wrapped up the first appearance in the ACC’s title game before kickoff of their 34-21 win against Virginia at Memorial Stadium.
Thanks to North Carolina’s win over Boston College, which featured a noon kickoff, the Tigers knew they had clinched a rematch against Georgia Tech for the ACC title 20 minutes before kickoff.
Clemson hasn’t won an ACC title since 1991. Tech, which defeated Clemson 30-27 in at Atlanta in Week 2, hasn’t won an ACC title since 1990.
The winner of the ACC title game will receive an Orange Bowl invite. Clemson hasn’t been to the Orange since Jan. 1 1982, when it defeated Nebraska to win a national title. It was also the last time the Tigers earned a berth to one of the four major bowls that now comprise the Bowl Championship Series.
